The Modeshift STARS Schools of the Region are set for the National School Travel Awards.

The Modeshift STARS Regional Awards took place throughout England in November. Over 70 schools were invited the award events, in recognition for demonstrating best practice in the promotion of sustainable school travel. At the events the Modeshift STARS Schools of the Region were awarded and the schools were presented their awards by representatives from the Department for Transport.

Modeshift STARS, which is supported by the Department for Transport, is the national school travel awards scheme that has been established to recognise schools that have demonstrated excellence in supporting walking, cycling and other forms of sustainable travel for the journey to and from school. 69 local authorities across the country participate in the scheme and these authorities work with their schools to support the promotion of sustainable travel.

The benefits to Modeshift STARS can be far reaching and can lead to reductions in car use and less congestion in and around a school site. This can also lead to improvements air quality and can provide children and young people with more opportunities for physical activity through active travel.

Schools were nominated by their local authorities for demonstrating best practice in the promotion of sustainable school travel. These nominated schools were invited to attend the Modeshift STARS Regional Awards were the Schools of the Local Authority and the Schools of the Region were announced.
