Ashlyns School in Berkhamsted has achieved Modeshift STARS Outstanding School Travel Plan Accreditation, recognising years of commitment to helping more people choose walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport for everyday journeys.
The accreditation celebrates the school’s long-standing partnership with Hertfordshire County Council’s Active and Safer Travel Team. Together, they have created opportunities for pupils, staff and families to travel more actively while improving safety around the school.
Building on Success
Ashlyns School has taken a consistent approach to promoting active travel. Each year, the school has introduced new initiatives while building on previous successes.
In 2023, staff worked with local primary schools to explore shared traffic concerns and identify ways to improve journeys for everyone.
The following year, pupils earned house points for completing the school’s travel survey. As a result, the school gathered valuable feedback to help shape future activities.
Then, in 2025, the school encouraged parents and carers to take part in Hertfordshire County Council’s pedestrian crossing consultation. This helped give the community a voice in improving local routes to school.
Pupils Making a Difference
This year, Ashlyns pupils continued to lead by example.
Sixth form students walked to local primary schools to deliver smartphone safety sessions. Along the way, they demonstrated the benefits of active travel while strengthening links between schools across the community.
The project showed how older pupils can inspire younger children and become positive role models for safer, healthier everyday journeys.
Working in Partnership
Strong partnerships have played a key role in the school’s success.
Ashlyns School has worked closely with Hertfordshire County Council’s Active and Safer Travel Team to embed active travel across the school community. Together, they have combined pupil engagement, community involvement and practical action to create lasting change.
As a result, active travel has become an important part of school life rather than a one-off campaign.
Celebrating an Outstanding Achievement
Dacorum Borough Council Mayor, Councillor Stevens, presented the Outstanding School Travel Plan Accreditation to Headteacher James Shapland and Travel Champion Mrs Sparks. Shirley Clark, Hertfordshire County Council’s Active and Safer Travel Team in attendance.
The accreditation recognises years of commitment, collaboration and continuous improvement. Most importantly, it highlights how schools can work with local partners to create safer, healthier and more inviting everyday journeys for everyone.
