Active Travel Ambassadors Take Centre Stage at the National Modeshift Convention

At this year’s National Modeshift Convention, delegates will hear directly from the young people helping to shape better everyday journeys in their schools and communities.

Active Travel Ambassadors from the Bruntcliffe Academy will deliver a live Active Travel Inspectors session. Delegates will see the process through the eyes of young people and gain a fresh perspective on travel.

A Different Perspective

This session offers something different …

Rather than hearing adults discuss the challenges and opportunities surrounding school travel, delegates will see how young people identify issues, gather evidence and influence change in their schools and local areas.

The students have completed an The students have already completed an Active Travel Inspection around their school, assessing the local environment against the seven themes used within the Active Travel England Area Check tool. At the Convention, they will carry out a live inspection around the venue, sharing their findings with delegates in real time.

By comparing the two locations, delegates will gain a unique insight into how young people experience their surroundings and what they believe makes a place safe, accessible and appealing for active travel.

Young People Driving Improvements

Active Travel Ambassadors (ATAs) play a key role in successful secondary school travel initiatives across the country.

Working alongside school staff and local authority partners, they help develop campaigns, engage their peers, collect evidence and champion improvements that support walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport.

The Bruntcliffe Academy Story

Bruntcliffe Academy’s ATA’s have shown what can be achieved when young people are empowered to lead.

The team delivered a school-wide campaign that engaged more than 1,000 pupils and encouraged more active journeys to school. Through the programme, students also developed confidence in public speaking, teamwork and leadership.

Team Modeshift in Action

The Convention theme, Team Modeshift United: Better Everyday Journeys Together, recognises that meaningful change happens when schools, local authorities, partners and young people work together.

The ATA session brings that theme to life. It highlights the important role young people play in creating healthier, safer and more inviting communities.

Why Their Voice Matters

The ATI session will showcase the confidence, leadership and communication skills that young people develop through the programme.

Delegates will gain valuable insight into what matters most to students, the barriers they face and the solutions they believe will make the biggest difference.
