Modeshift congratulates Members awarded Active Travel England Innovation Fund grants

We’re to congratulate several Members who have secured funding through Active Travel England’s new Innovation Fund, supporting projects that make walking, wheeling and cycling easier for everyday journeys.

Communities across England will benefit from a wide range of innovative projects after Active Travel England awarded grants to 12 successful schemes. The programme supports new approaches that improve access to walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport, particularly for underrepresented groups and communities.

Each successful project received up to £100,000 to either test new ideas or expand existing initiatives that are already delivering positive change locally.

Supporting innovation in walking, wheeling and cycling

The funded projects include:

  • Shared e-cargo bike schemes
  • Walking and cycling buses
  • Accessible wheeling technology
  • Gamified behaviour change programmes
  • Community cycling initiatives
  • Active travel mobility hubs

This is the first time Active Travel England has awarded funding directly to small and medium-sized businesses and community organisations.

Congratulations to Modeshift Members and Supporters

Modeshift would particularly like to congratulate Corporate Premium Members Go Jauntly and Love to Ride, alongside Supporters CoMoUK, on their successful funding bids.

Go Jauntly –  £92,508

‘This City Moves: Liverpool vs Birmingham’ will use app-based challenges and friendly city competition to encourage more walking and wheeling among women and families in Birmingham and Liverpool.

Love to Ride –  £60,980

‘The Missing Majority’ project will expand Love to Ride’s established digital cycling platform to include walking and support more integrated journeys across four local authority areas.

CoMoUK –  £86,345

CoMoUK will deliver pop-up active travel mobility hubs in areas of high deprivation, helping improve access to active travel and employment opportunities for people not currently in education, employment or training.

A positive step for everyday journeys

Nick Butler, Chief Executive Officer at Modeshift, said:

‘It is fantastic to see Modeshift Members recognised through the Active Travel England Innovation Fund. These projects demonstrate the creativity, collaboration and community-led thinking needed to help more people choose walking, wheeling and cycling for everyday journeys.

Supporting innovation at a local level will help build the evidence, confidence and partnerships needed to create healthier communities and improve access to travel choices for everyone.’

Building healthier and more connected communities

The wider list of funded projects includes initiatives focused on:

  • Accessible route mapping
  • NHS and public sector commuting
  • Community cycle libraries
  • Bike bus networks
  • Sustainable visitor travel
  • Employment and health support through cycling

Learning from the projects will be shared nationally through Active Travel England and the Government Grant Managed Service, helping shape future active travel delivery and safer streets initiatives through to 2030.

The funding announcement highlights growing national support for practical, community-led approaches that help make walking, wheeling and cycling part of everyday life.
