Throughout September, schools across the UK celebrated Mode Shift Month 2026 and this year’s theme, Mobility for Everyone.
The campaign highlighted the excellent work already taking place in schools. Activities helped pupils build confidence, gain independence and access opportunities in their communities. Schools showcased a wide range of initiatives, including inclusive walking activities, adapted cycling programmes, pupil-led campaigns and community events.
Warmley Park School, Millwood Primary Special School and Sir Charles Parsons School were among those leading the way. Each school took a different approach, but all shared the same goal: helping every pupil feel included, participate and thrive.
A Month to Be Proud Of
Warmley Park School, Millwood Primary Special School and Sir Charles Parsons School are just three examples of the great work taking place across the Modeshift STARS network.
Their stories show the impact of putting accessibility, inclusion and independence at the heart of school life.
During Mode Shift Month, schools celebrated their achievements, shared success stories and inspired others. Pupils showed leadership through Active Travel Ambassador initiatives. Families got involved with school activities, and staff created opportunities that helped young people build confidence and independence.
Most importantly, these schools showed that Mobility for Everyone is about creating opportunities. Whether through walking activities, community visits, cycling sessions or improved accessibility, they demonstrated how inclusive mobility can make a positive difference to young people’s lives.
Jason McAleese, Modeshift STARS Programme Officer (Education), said:
‘This year’s Mode Shift Month has been a powerful reminder of what schools can achieve when inclusion is placed at the centre of mobility. We’ve seen pupils growing in confidence, developing independence and discovering new opportunities within their communities. From walking initiatives to cycling activities and community events, schools have shown that Mobility for Everyone is not simply a theme, it’s something that can be brought to life every day.’
