Mayor of York and North Yorkshire’s Active Travel Fund

David Skaith, the Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, has made available £1 million to make walking, wheeling and cycling safer and easier across the region.

Community organisations, charities, schools and businesses are invited to apply for a share of the Mayor’s Active Travel Fund to support more initiatives that will transform everyday journeys and support a safer school run.

Active travel has numerous benefits, including:

  • Safer streets
  • Cleaner air
  • Healthier communities

Background

Putting the health of people and supporting thriving communities is at the heart of the Mayor of York and North Yorkshire’s vision for the region.

David Skaith, the Mayor, recognises active travel – walking, cycling, and wheeling – as a core part of an integrated transport network. In June 2025 he announced his intention to launch an Active Travel Fund – £4 million available to public bodies, community organisations, charities and businesses for initiatives to make active travel safer, easier and more accessible.

In October 2025, he appointed an Active Travel Commissioner, Rhiannon Letman-Wade, to drive forward improvements in this area.

The Mayor’s Active Travel Fund opened to public bodies in December 2025.

More recently, a pot of £1 million has been made available to community groups, businesses, charities and schools. The submission window closes on Friday 10 April 2026.

The fund is being managed by North Yorkshire Sport on behalf of the Combined Authority. Organisations can apply here: https://yorknorthyorks-ca.gov.uk/project/mayors-active-travel-fund/

It’s part of the Mayor’s Moving Forward campaign, which aims to support communities, enable people to become healthier, and grow our economy through a total of £7 million investment in schemes that support movement, health and connection to the outdoors:

  • Active Travel
  • Movement, Activity and Sport
  • Men’s Mental Health
  • Connected to the Outdoors
