Children at South Normanton Nursery School got into the Modeshift Active Travel December spirit with a ‘bling your bike’ design challenge as part of their Modeshift STARS travel plan.
In conjunction with the Primary Engineer scheme, the children worked alongside Mike Baker from engineering company Akriveia and Derbyshire County Council’s senior transport officer Rob Bounds, to solve the problem of how to ensure Santa’s sleigh can keep moving when all the reindeer have decided to go on holiday!
The children explored rockets, ramps and wings, thinking about how these could be used to give a bicycle the power of flight whilst at the same time making sure their design would be safe in the dark by being bright and easily seen!
Working together using a variety of bright, shiny and reflective materials the children’s creations included a reindeer bicycle complete with jet rocket propulsion so that Santa can continue to make all those important toy deliveries on time.
Nursery teacher Sarah Waldram said, ‘It was a super day of learning which really sparked the children’s imagination, inspiring them to explore creative engineering ideas, as well as making safer journeys by cycling, walking, wheeling and scooting.’
