Case Study: Driving Sustainable Travel at Etc. For Business
When Erika Marshall joined the Education Training Collective (Etc.) 2019, a group of colleges and training centres comprising Bede Sixth Form College, Innersummit, NETA Training, Redcar & Cleveland College, Stockton Riverside College and the Skills Academy across the Tees Valley and wider North East, she quickly became involved in the Green Initiatives Group (GIG), a team of volunteers committed to sustainability.
As part of her role and with the support of GIG members, Erika has driven efforts to improve sustainable travel and engage staff in sustainable commuting options. This work has been integral to achieving Modeshift STARS accreditation, particularly as part of a new site development, where a robust Travel Plan was a planning requirement.
Key Achievements
Car Sharing Success – A major increase in car sharing, monitored through staff travel miles claimed. Buddy Bays (priority parking for car sharers) encourage participation.
Staff Engagement – 45% of employees expressed a willingness to car share, and 16% said they would if they had help finding a buddy.
Public Transport Collaboration – Students primarily travel by train, though bus links are limited. The team works closely with public transport providers to offer discounts and incentives.
Long-Term Monitoring – An annual travel survey tracks shifts in behaviour and informs future strategies.
Erika highlights how Modeshift STARS has helped solidify their commitment:
‘Sustainability isn’t just about waste management — it’s about creating a culture where staff and students take travel seriously. Achieving STARS focused our efforts and made a real impact. I’d definitely recommend it to others!’
Collaboration and Support
A huge thanks to Ruth Simpson and Flora Woollard at SAJ Transport Consultants, whose expertise helped shape the Travel Plan. Ruth reflected on the partnership:
‘It was fantastic to work with Erika and the team to develop a strong Travel Plan. These are live documents that evolve, supporting active and sustainable travel for the long term. Stockton Riverside College’s achievements are well deserved!’
With plans for a new NETA Training facility as part of the Etc., sustainable travel remains a priority, ensuring that both staff and students benefit from accessible sustainable transport choices.
