Brompton Bike Hire Joins Modeshift to expand Micromobility Network and support everyday journeys

Welcome Brompton Bike Hire to #TeamModeshift.

As a leading name in active travel and micromobility, Brompton Bike Hire brings with them a commitment to practical, low-cost solutions that help people make sustainable, everyday journeys. Their decision to join Modeshift reflects a shared vision: to expand access to active travel, change behaviour, and support long-term, meaningful change at both local and national levels.

‘We’re thrilled to welcome Brompton Bike Hire into our growing network of Members,’ said Nick Butler, Modeshift’s Chief Operating Officer.

‘They’re an iconic brand with a practical, scalable solution that complements the work of our Members across education, business, local government and community travel planning. Their ethos aligns perfectly with our mission to empower organisations to deliver effective, sustainable travel behaviour change.’

Automated docking system

Brompton Bike Hire’s model is built around their automated docking system. It’s a compact, solar or mains-powered dock that allows users to pre-book, collect, and return bikes 24/7 via a smartphone app. Users pay a flat rate of £5 per 24 hours, and can return the bike to any other participating location.

Designed for flexibility, each dock can start with just eight bikes and scale up to 32 using modular pods. The units are classified as temporary structures. This makes planning and installation straightforward and they’re relocatable if needed. Maintenance is carried out exclusively by Brompton accredited mechanics, ensuring high standards of safety and quality.

Sam Coldham, Business Development Manager at Brompton Bike Hire explains:

‘We joined Modeshift to grow our dock network, expand our presence in micromobility, and connect with like-minded individuals working to create real change.

Modeshift’s work is vital in bringing organisations together to tackle the everyday challenges of sustainable transport. We’re excited to be part of that movement.’

Driving social impact and local change

Brompton’s approach goes beyond just putting cycles on the street. With proven success in boroughs like Newham, where the company has demonstrated a deep social responsibility ethos. They have been offering discounts for low-income groups and supporting behaviour change events like Car-Free Day.

‘We’re impressed by Brompton’s can-do attitude,’ said Murray Woodburn, Head of Transport Policies and Programmes in Newham.

‘They’re always willing to get involved, offer event support, and promote cycling as a whole — not just their own cycles. It’s clear they care about breaking down barriers to active travel.’

We look forward to working with Brompton Bike Hire as they connect with fellow Modeshift Members and help shape the future of everyday travel across the UK.
