Black History Month – This week we celebrate Claudette Colvin

Black History Month 2023 – Celebrating our Sisters

Throughout Black History Month we’re celebrating the Sheroes past and present who have made outstanding contributions to Travel and Transport and have inspired active and sustainable travel today.

This week we continue our celebration with Claudette Colvin, who refused to give up her seat to a white passenger.

In March 1955, nine months before Rosa Parks defied segregation laws by refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, 15-year-old Claudette Colvin did exactly the same thing. Eclipsed by Parks, her act of defiance was largely ignored for many years. She herself didn’t talk about it much, but she spoke to the BBC back in 2018.
