The Department for Transport (DfT) is broadening access to the Connectivity Tool (full version) for all built environment professionals, and launching a new publicly available platform, Connectivity Tool Lite. Together, these services will help to support built environment professionals and the public to understand how connected a place is, and the transport interventions needed to support it.
Forthcoming updates to Government policy guidance will increasingly integrate connectivity into plan-making. The Connectivity Tool underpins this by combining transport and land-use data to generate a national connectivity score for England and Wales, helping planners and decision-takers consider access to jobs, schools, healthcare and other everyday services by walking, cycling, public transport and driving.
Connectivity Tool Lite
Connectivity Tool Lite has been designed to allow everyone to access the service and understand its outputs. It does not include advanced features found in the full functionality of the Connectivity Tool, such as uploading sites, creating impact areas or proposing new public transport interventions.
You can use Connectivity Tool Lite to:
- view connectivity scores for any location in England and Wales
- move around the map to see how scores change in different areas
Connectivity Tool Lite is open access and publicly available to everyone.
Connectivity Tool (full version)
The Connectivity Tool helps built environment professionals to understand the connectivity of places in England and Wales.
You can use the full Connectivity Tool to:
- display how any location in England and Wales is connected to everyday services by walking, driving, cycling and public transport
- plot new transport routes to understand how these would affect an area’s connectivity
The full version of the Connectivity Tool is available to:
- all local and central government users
- Built environment professionals in the private sector and other organisations (for example developers, architects, consultants and academic institutes)
All local authority and central government users already have access. Other built environment professionals can now request access.
How to access the tools
Both the Connectivity Tool and Connectivity Tool Lite can be accessed via GOV.UK: Connectivity Tool – GOV.UK.
Connectivity Tool (full version)
To use the tool, you will need to:
- have been granted access to the Connectivity Tool
- sign in using GOV.UK One Login with your work email address

- Complete and return to [email protected]
The team will aim to confirm the outcome of your request within five working days.
