Background

Since starting their STARS journey in 2020/21, the school has achieved a remarkable shift in travel behaviour.

The percentage of pupils walking to school rose from just 14% to 52%, making active travel the norm within the school community.

Key Initiatives

Upper Batley High School’s success is built on a broad programme of initiatives, led by staff and learners working in partnership:

  • Road Safety Awareness: Campaigns and assemblies raising awareness about safe, active travel.
  • Cycling Support: Distribution of hi-vis jackets, reflectors, and bike locks, plus upgraded cycle parking facilities.
  • Speed Awareness Campaign: Monitoring traffic near the school in collaboration with the council.
  • Air Quality & Educational Campaigns: Student-led projects highlighting the impact of reduced car use.
  • Eco-Schools Achievement: Recognition for embedding sustainability across the school.

Community Collaboration

Aman Singh Kang, Headteacher said:

‘We try to give our learners every possible opportunity to develop, both through the curriculum and through enrichment activities, and this is a prime example. Not only have they been rewarded for their efforts, but they have learned essential skills that will be invaluable for them as they continue their education post-16 and in their careers. We are very proud of their achievements with this work overall, as well as winning this prestigious award.’

Lisa Woods, Geography Teacher said:

‘It was an amazing experience for our learners and a fantastic result, which is truly deserved. They have worked really hard on the travel plan, speedwatch and air quality programmes, which they demonstrated through their presentation as well as showcasing their future plans. Our learners certainly don’t rest on their laurels and we are excited about their next steps!’

Looking Ahead

Upper Batley High School’s award winning work demonstrates how schools can empower students to drive meaningful change in their communities. Their commitment to sustainability and active travel continues to grow, inspiring other schools to follow their example.
