Jenny Royall

Position: Active Travel Ambassador (West Midlands)

Year joined Modeshift: August 2024

Career History:

I was a secondary school English teacher for 25 years, spending most of my teaching career at KEVI Camp Hill School for Girls. I have taught numerous GCSE and A level specifications in this time and was KS3 Coordinator for English for many years. In addition to planning and resourcing the curriculum, this involved organising lots of enrichment activities, trips and an annual sponsored Readathon. In my last two years at the school I had a reduced teaching timetable and mostly worked as a cover supervisor, allowing me time to fully embrace the role of Sustainability Lead which I took on in September 2023. The highlight of this was helping to organise the Schools Climate Assembly in October 2023, with keynote speakers Chris Packham and Hamza Yassin.

Why did you join Modeshift?

As Sustainability Lead I loved working with students to help them promote an eco-friendly lifestyle, including focus on waste and recycling, energy use and food as well as active travel. I was the ATA School Champion and when I found out my predecessor Alice was leaving, I jumped at the chance to join Team Modeshift!

Outside of Team Modeshift:

As a former English teacher, it’s no surprise that I love reading and a highlight of each month is meeting with my book group. I’m incredibly lucky to have a lovely independent bookshop just 10 minutes’ walk from my house and as well as finding me in the shop and attending The Heath’s many author events, I’ve also helped to organise some of these, even acting as chair twice! When I reduced my teaching timetable I joined a choir called ‘notorious’ and love the diverse material we sing, with gigs in unusual venues. I also love walking, making blackberry jam and doing jigsaws.
