Active Travel England has announced a new programme of work to help councils design streets that are safer for women and girls.
Almost 9 in 10 women say they have felt unsafe walking at night. Whether that’s because of unlit pavements, poorly maintained routes or personal safety fears – more needs to be done to help women and girls feel safe walking in their local areas.
Through new guidance and training, ATE will work with local authorities to identify the barriers that prevent women and girls from walking and wheeling – because streets should be inclusive for everyone.

Councils can now sign up to training sessions in April, exploring how the needs of women and girls can be better reflected in active travel design.
