Guest blog: Creating an Active Travel Culture in a community care setting

Yvonne Stead (Wheels for All) and Elizabeth Saul (Transport for Greater Manchester) will present ‘Creating an Active Travel Culture in a community care setting’ at the National Modeshift Convention during the Split Session 5 – Empowering Individuals, on Tuesday 25 November.

Here they share some insights into the session and what audiences can expect.

‘Across all our work streams and as part of the wider work within the active travel network, we aim to increase the opportunities for individuals and groups to walk, wheel and cycle. With the aim to make routes accessible whilst also promoting active travel for individuals to become healthier and happier.

As highlighted by Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty at the recent Active Travel Conference in York:

“Increasing physical activity has health benefits across the life course. As part of this, we need to make walking and cycling more accessible, and safer, as well as access to green space easier and more equitable. This will help remove barriers to improving physical activity levels and could significantly improve the health of England’s increasingly urban population.”

However, we need to remember the needs, in terms of accessibility, of those individuals with a disability and or long-term health condition. Our dream, as Wheels for All, is a world where every disabled person and those with a long-term health condition can feel the exhilaration, joy and empowerment of cycling.

As part of our wider work stream, is a focused project of delivery within targeted community care settings.  Prior to project delivery, individuals within these sites, did not have access or the opportunity to cycle. Following support from Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), we have been able to develop a focused opportunity which previously did not exist and meets the specific needs of the individuals.

It is important, that we engage people in their community settings and provide a service to enable them the opportunity to cycle and do so whilst being empathetic in our delivery.

Our presentation will showcase how we have engaged targeted community care organisations and enabled them to provide inclusive cycling opportunities. We will showcase how individuals have developed cycling skills and progressed within the care setting.

This project enables us to meet people where they are and not where they were and we look forward to sharing this with you.’
