Give your pupils a voice – become Active Travel Inspectors!

Are you ready to put students at the heart of improving school travel? Our Active Travel Inspectors initiative empowers Key Stage 2 pupils to assess their own routes and help make walking, wheeling, and cycling safer and more enjoyable. It’s part of our commitment to creating everyday journeys that connect communities and reduce congestion.

What Is the Active Travel Inspectors Programme?

  • Pupils become inspectors, evaluating their school neighbourhood against seven themes, from crossings and traffic to green spaces and sounds around us.
  • Supported by school staff, they score different aspects based on their own experiences and develop ideas for real improvements.
  • Findings can be shared with local authorities and reported via the Modeshift STARS platform.

What’s in the Resource Pack?

When you purchase the printed Active Travel Inspector pack or download the full digital version (if you’re STARS-registered), you’ll get:

  • A PowerPoint slide deck to introduce active travel, explain the inspector role, and walk through the themes.
  • A Teacher Activity Booklet with guidance on carrying out the inspection, plus fun follow-up activities.
  • A Pupil Activity Sheet, a printable checklist so students can record what they see, hear, and feel as they inspect.

Items from the Active Travel Inspector resource pack. Including a bright yellow rucksack, badges and blue high viz vests.

Cool Tools & Accessories

Want to make it extra fun and engaging? Our ATI starter pack (available to buy) includes:

  • Bright blue waistcoats (so inspectors feel like real-life heroes)
  • Clipboards, badges, pencils, stickers, bike bells, and a handy bag to hold it all
  • A special tool for measuring pavement dips and kerb drops, giving pupils real, measurable feedback on how walkable their area is.

(10% of sales support Modeshift, and 100% of Brightwayz’ profits are reinvested into promoting active travel.)

Why it matters

  • It gives pupils a real voice, their observations can influence local decision-makers to make real change.
  • Helps schools build strong relationships with local authorities by sharing on-the-ground feedback.
  • Supports pupils’ physical and mental wellbeing, contributes to reduced congestion, and helps improve air quality.

How to get started

  1. Make sure your school is registered with Modeshift STARS,  this gives you free access to the digital resources.
  2. Log into the STARS platform → Guidance Dashboard → download the full ATI resource pack.
  3. Want the physical starter pack for your pupils? Order via the Modeshift STARS shop. It’s a great way to boost engagement.
  4. After inspection, submit your findings in STARS. You’ll even get downloadable certificates for your young inspectors!

By investing a little time and a few resources, you can empower pupils to lead change in their own communities. The Active Travel Inspectors programme isn’t just about travel, it’s about building confident, thoughtful young citizens who understand how to make their neighbourhoods more welcoming and safer for everyone.
