Celebrating the Success of TravelWise Week 2024
A huge well done to everyone who took part in TravelWise Week. Your efforts made the campaign a fantastic success, promoting smarter, greener, and healthier travel choices.
Now’s the time to reflect and celebrate the incredible activities and initiatives you took part in. Whether it was cycling, walking, car-sharing, or public transport challenges, your contributions have helped make a real difference in sustainable travel.
These awards recognise organisations that have gone above and beyond in raising awareness of sustainable transport and delivering impactful activities during the week.
Finalists Announced
It was a difficult job for our judges but we’re thrilled to announce the shortlist for the Modeshift TravelWise Week 2024 Awards. Winners will be announced on Thursday 27 March, at the National STARS Summit.
Best Modeshift TravelWise Week Campaign
Local Authority:
- Hull City Council
A wide range of activities were delivered across all seven days of TravelWise Week, with over 250 individuals engaged throughout. Activities were delivered by Hull City Council and their partners and included Maritime guided walks; Dr. Bike sessions with over 30 cycles being checked and repaired, e-bike try-outs taking place, as well as 20 cycles being securely marked; Freshers fayre activities; and a media launch.
- Leeds City Council
Leeds City Council’s Influencing Travel Behaviour Team delivered a complimentary combination of in-person and online activities and promotion across five days of TravelWise Week. From school assemblies to launch new School Streets and scooter training, to senior management meetings within the City Council, well over 350 individuals were engaged at events. Leeds City Council also had a strong presence online and on social media across the week with well over 2000 views across numerous posts on X, and over 1000 council staff receiving TravelWise Week related e-bulletins.
- Derbyshire County Council
Derbyshire County Council focused their efforts on engaging schools in TravelWise Week, with activities including ‘Make a pledge Monday’, scoot to school and scooter smart playground sessions, a travel trail for the journey to school, as well as a car free day. All active travel modes were promoted across the week with well over 450 pupils taking part.
Business & Workplace:
- Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
Throughout TravelWise Week, bus operators attended a number of sites across the trust to encourage bus travel to hospital staff, where they gifted free day travel passes to interested individuals. The benefits of cycling were also promoted, with staff being offered a 2-hour free cycle journey during the week.
- SAJ Transport Consultants
Staff at SAJ Transport Consultants got competitive throughout TravelWise Week by taking part in a Step Challenge. Steps were counted during commutes to and from work, lunchtime walks and runs, and during weekend activities. The team also took part in a wellbeing walk as part of teambuilding day.
Residential:
- Linmere, Central Bedfordshire Council
TravelWise Week was celebrated across all seven days at Linmere with a huge range of activities for residents and schools who reside within the housing estate. ‘Freddie the fresh air frog’ launched a park and stride at a local school, free bus vouchers were provided to residents, hire bikes and rail travel were promoted to all, and scavenger hunts resulted in amazing prizes!
- Swindon Travel Choices, Swindon Borough Council
An intense three days of activities were delivered to residents across two developments within Swindon. Walking for leisure, and bus travel were the focus with free bus tickets provided for residents, followed by a guided walking tour around Swindon’s historic railway village and free coffee and cake! A total of 45 residents participated.
School:
- Tylers Green Middle School
TraveWise Week proved to be a busy one for staff, pupils and their parents at Tylers Green Middle School. All travel modes were promoted throughout the week with pupils enjoying a huge number of activities including pledge and bingo-board making, a playground Zumbathon, and car free day! All 255 children and 30 staff were involved in some way across the week.
- Chew Stoke Church School
Pupils were involved in TravelWise Week form the get-go at Chews Stoke Church School, with the PE Council creating a video to promote the week and leading a whole-school assembly to introduce what the week involves and why they are taking part. Walk, cycle and scoot to school days, lunchtime scooter clubs, and pledge making activities followed and engaged with all 183 pupils.
- William Gilbert Endowed C of E Primary School and Nursery
‘Make a pledge Monday’ kick-started TravelWise Week for pupils and staff, with an assembly taking place to let pupils know about all the exciting activities taking place during the week. Activities ran across all five days and included ‘Modeshift TravelWise Travel Trail Tuesday’, a cycle and walk to school day to coincide with National Fitness Day, ‘Lucky lock Thursday’ and Car Free Friday which saw 159 children scoot to school. A raffle also ran throughout the week with the lucky winners being announced on Friday.
