Modeshift STARS supports participants of the NHS England Net Zero Travel & Transport – Step up a Gear programme with  Modeshift Membership for two years!

Introduction:

Step Up a Gear’ (SUaG) is a two-year programme to work intensively with a proportion of the NHS on specific interventions which will deliver modal shift. The SUaG network is made up of 30 participants; approximately 50 NHS trusts are represented when you break down the Integrated Care System participants into their constituent parts.

The interventions being taken forward by the participants cover one or several of the following areas:

  • Active Travel (cycling, walking, or wheeling)
  • Public Transport (Bus, Train, Tram, Demand Responsive Transport)
  • Cars & parking (including permits, car sharing, car clubs, pool cars)
  • Use of technology (in all the above areas as well as in transport and travel planning)

What level of support is available to participating NHS Trusts in order that they have a chance of generating modal shift on site?

The Net Zero Travel & Transport team provides support to the participants to develop, deliver, monitor, and evaluate their interventions over the period of the programme. They will broadcast the work undertaken by the participants to the wider NHS and work with participants to develop ‘how to’ and good practice guides / case studies. The participants have all signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with NZTT to cement their participation in SUaG. Whilst participation is not legally binding, the MOU is signed by a senior Board member from within the participant’s organisation. This is important as it demonstrates senior level commitment to the programme.

What support is available from partners working on the project?

Monthly ‘How to’ sessions are planned to share tips / good practice ideas with the Network from both within and outside the NHS. Sessions have focussed on Active travel, with speakers from Sustrans and Active Travel England; Public Transport, with speakers from Arriva and the Confederation of Passenger Transport; Travel plan production & monitoring with ‘Modeshift’; and working with local government, with Transport for Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire ICS. Some of the sessions have also taken the form of ‘master classes’, on themes which participants have sought more detail on – e.g. ‘Communications’ and ‘Data’.

In addition, participants have been provided with a two year membership to the sustainable travel organisation ‘Modeshift’, enabling access to a large range of resources and the potential to secure recognition for their positive actions through the national ‘Modeshift Stars’ scheme. The Modeshift online platform enables the participant to monitor their interventions, travel surveys and travel plans. The Modeshift network also enables participants to make contact and develop working relationships with relevant local authority partners through their periodic regional meetings and national conventions.
