Hull held its first Active Travel Festival, at Ennerdale Leisure Centre. First Step Cycle and Cllr Hester Bridges presented our Modeshift STARS partner schools with their accreditation certificates at the Active Travel Festival, this took place on the 30th of March. Olly Rawlings, First Step Cycle’s Modeshift STARS coordinator was in attendance and helped with the organisation and running of the event.

The HAS Active Travel Festival had schools and local sports partners from across the city join us for a range of activities devoted to active travel, healthy living, and bike maintenance. The day saw children testing their skills, breaking down bikes, fixing them, and riding them, on the clock! If they weren’t learning how to fix and ride a bike, they were learning how to be safe on one with Safer Roads Humber.

Staff and children alike enjoyed a range of workshops covering active travel and its benefits for cardiovascular health, focus, healthy lifestyles, and environmental awareness. For many schools, the Active Travel Festival was an important step in turning the tide of the inactivity of the pandemic.

With children becoming increasingly more environmentally conscious, the Festival was an opportunity for them to engage in an activity that could make a real difference to their carbon footprint. The activities encourage a range of active travel including walking, cycling and scooting, no engines need apply!
