Nominations are OPEN for the 2023 Team Modeshift National Sustainable Travel Awards!
The Team Modeshift National Sustainable Travel Awards recognise Modeshift Members and Partners for their outstanding contributions to increasing levels of sustainable and active travel.
Organisations are invited to nominate initiatives they have been involved with, or that have been undertaken in their area, that demonstrate best practice, innovation, inclusion, and can prove impact. Nominations may include projects targeting businesses, education establishments or communities.
You may notice a few tweaks to this year’s awards categories and criteria; please have a good look and submit your nomination in the category you feel it best fits.

To nominate a project, person or team, simply download and complete the Team Modeshift National Sustainable Travel Awards Nomination Form 2023 (excel 596 Kb) and send it to travelawards@modeshift.org.uk
Nominations will close on Monday 31 July with the finalists being announced on Friday 29 September.
Awards Categories:
Team Modeshift Partnership of the Year
This award recognises and celebrates the efforts being made by individuals and groups to work in partnership with education providers, businesses and community groups, to promote and encourage active and sustainable travel.
Best Project Under £1,000
This award recognises budget busting projects and initiatives that have cost less than £1,000. Nominations will be accepted from organisations that have made a contribution of less than £1,000 to deliver a successful sustainable travel project or initiative. Any ‘payment in kind’, sponsorship or other financial contribution could be used to ‘start up’ the project and does not need to be included in the £1,000. However, the contribution will need to be detailed in the nomination and must show how the project will be sustained without the additional support.
Business Engagement Project of the Year
This award recognises projects and initiatives for business travel, developed by individuals and groups to promote and encourage active and sustainable travel. Projects can include those that involve multi-stranded elements of sustainable travel, e.g. Green Travel Weeks.
Community Engagement Project of the Year
This award recognises projects and initiatives for travel in communities, developed by individuals and groups to promote and encourage active and sustainable travel. Projects can include those that involve multi-stranded elements of sustainable travel, e.g. Green Travel Weeks.
Education Engagement Project of the Year
This award recognises projects and initiatives for travel to and between education providers, developed by individuals and groups to promote and encourage sustainable travel. Projects can include those that involve multi-stranded elements of sustainable travel, e.g. Green Travel Weeks.
Team of the Year
This award recognises teams that have made a significant contribution to sustainable travel locally or nationally.
Excellence in Active Travel
This award recognises projects and initiatives developed by any Team Modeshift member, be that an individual, team, or organisation within education, business, or community settings, to promote and encourage active travel. Projects can include all active travel modes including walking, cycling, and scooting.
E-Mobility Project of the Year
This award recognises specific e-mobility projects and initiatives delivered within an organisation or by a local authority over the last 12 months. The project or initiative will have focused primarily on seeking to increase the role of e-mobility on a regular journey, either between sites during the working day, or to and from a site as part of a regular journey. This journey will have been undertaken by employees, students, customers, visitors, or another identified group of service users.
Outstanding Achievement Awards:
Modeshift will also be awarding two ‘outstanding achievement awards’ that will be presented to an organisation and individual that has demonstrated outstanding commitment to promote sustainable travel over the previous 12-months. Nominations cannot be submitted for these awards, rather the Modeshift Executive Board discuss and identify organisations and individuals we feel are deserving of the award.
Organisation of the Year
This award recognises Organisations that have made a significant contribution to sustainable travel locally or nationally.
Individual Contribution to Sustainable Travel
This award recognises individuals that have made a significant contribution to sustainable travel locally or nationally.
Criteria:
Nominations must show how they meet at least three of the following criteria:
- It is innovative or creative – a new idea or successful adaptation of an old one
- It is inclusive and encompasses equality and diversity
- It shows engagement and involvement with the target group – e.g. pupils, students, staff, volunteers have been involved in the design and/or delivery of the project
- It involves a joined-up approach, working in partnership with other organisations, to share good practice
- Its success can be measured in outputs and outcomes, e.g. providing 10 pool bikes for staff (output) has seen a reduction in 20 car journeys per week (outcome)
- It is sustainable, has proven longevity and/or has now become part of the way of working within your organisation
- The travel behaviour change achieved by the initiative has been sustained
- It is transferable; other Modeshift Members have, or can, duplicate the initiative
- It is cost effective and shows good value for money
- It identifies barriers and provides solutions to allow the target audience to travel more sustainably
