Cambridgeshire schools are celebrating national accreditation for their outstanding achievements in sustainable travel to and from school.
23 schools all picked up Modeshift STARS National Accreditation Awards for their work in enabling and promoting sustainable travel to school and reducing car use on the school run.
The schools have been working with Cambridgeshire County Council’s road safety team on their school travel plans using the Modeshift STARS (Sustainable Travel Accreditation and Recognition) national school travel planning programme.
Cllr Alex Beckett, Cambridgeshire County Council’s chair of the Highways and Transport Committee, said: “This is a fabulous achievement and an acknowledgement of the work that we do in safer, sustainable travel in Cambridgeshire. We think it’s so important for children to learn from a young age to be healthy, to walk or cycle when they can. Modeshift STARS presents a huge opportunity for us to increase the number of children and young people walking, cycling and scooting to schools across the county.
“These award-winning schools have begun a journey that will benefit not only their pupils but also the county by helping reduce vehicle numbers and emissions at peak times, making our area healthier and safer.”
The Road Safety Team hope that more schools in Cambridgeshire will take part in the Modeshift STARS travel planning scheme and be able to apply for the award to show their commitment to encouraging sustainable school travel.
