A cargo bike sharing scheme is now operating in Hackney

The first publicly available cargo bike sharing scheme in the country, Cargo Bike Share, launched last month
Eight new electrically assisted cargo bikes are now available to rent from four docking stations across Hackney, with two in Shoreditch, close to the borders with Islington and Tower Hamlets, one in London Fields and one in Stoke Newington.

The scheme – called Cargo Bike Share – is funded by the Mayor of London and the tri-borough Zero Emissions Network (ZEN), which helps residents and businesses in Tower Hamlets, Islington and Hackney save money, reduce emissions and improve local air quality.

ZEN currently supports businesses to use cargo bikes with free trials, training, maintenance and grants and this new service will help even more people discover the efficiency of cargo bikes. Each of the e-cargo bikes are capable of carrying up to 80kg – and can be used for shopping, deliveries, and moving small items of furniture.

The scheme is being delivered by urban bike share and micro-mobility provider Beryl and bikes are accessed through the Beryl app. It costs £1.50 to unlock the bike and 10p per minute thereafter. Users must return the cargo bike to the same docking station they hired it from.

The launch event was held at the Fleetwood Street docking station, Stoke Newington on Car Free Day 22nd September 2021. The event was also attended by Will Norman the Mayor of London’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner. Photographs supplied by Gary Manhine.
