A whirlwind week of learning for International TDM Delegation
Last month we welcomed a delegation of Transportation Demand Management (TDM) professionals from the United States in partnership with the Association for Commuter Transportation (ACT).
From Monday 24 to Friday 28 March, we hosted a week-long visit that brought together experts from both sides of the Atlantic to explore best practice in sustainable transport for major events.
Check out ACT’s initial thoughts in their write up.
Our Chief Executive Nick Butler has summed up the busiest week in Modeshift History here:
‘I’m slowly recovering from the busiest week in Team Modeshift history. There are not enough ways to say thank you to everyone that contributed to delivering such an epic week, but here’s a quick run down of what took place:
Monday: Kickoff at Wembley
Tom Legg and Jennifer Riley at The Football Association gave us a tour of Wembley Stadium and talked through how they manage spectator travel demand to major events to the stadium.
Tuesday: Transport for London and Olympic Park Insights
Over to Transport for London where Ceri James and colleagues took us through managing travel to non-ticketed events across the capital, before Modeshift’s Jon Foley took us through TDM measures for ticketed events, and Dan Panes, Great Western Railway, delivered a Train Operating Companies perspective.
On to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park for a ‘walk and talk’ around the park, to see how the site managed spectator travel demand during the Olympics, and how it continues to be used as a space for events, culture, work, and a place to live. Fantastic insights delivered by the team at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and London Legacy Development Corporation, Suki Kalirai, Shazia Hussain, Mark Camley, Ed Stearns, Sara-Ellen Williams, Ruth Lin Wong Holmes and Peter Swordy, all coordinated by Kerri Blyberg.
The afternoon saw us visit Major Events International Ltd hosted by Dennis Mills with presentations from Chris Thompson and Simon Grieve of You. Smart. Thing. and Peter Smith from Bristol Sport.
Wednesday: Stadium Sustainability at Tottenham and Wimbledon
We were onto the home of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club hosted by Richard Serra MRICS MRTPI, Neil Huddart and David Knowles showing us the best football stadium in the UK (COYS!) and sharing how they’ve reduced car travel by spectators to 23% at the new stadium.
An afternoon visit to All England Lawn Tennis Club with Matthew Crawcour and Hattie Park who delivered incredible insights into the travel challenges and solutions at the Wimbledon Championships, and a behind the scenes look at Centre Court.
Thursday: National STARS Summit Takes Center Stage
A highlight of the week – Our own event! The very first National STARS Summit. Celebrating Travel Plan best practice across all our schemes. We were delighted to be joined by Minister for Local Transport, Simon Lightwood MP who announced our National STARS Travel Awards winners.
Friday: A Northern Perspective on Travel Management
A trip north to meet Transport for Greater Manchester hosted by Steve Gilholme and supported by Laura Renshaw and Katie Culliney exploring the range of events that the team manage across the City.
And, finally – our last stop of the week was a visit with Rachel Hayward at Manchester City Football Club to hear about their Modeshift award winning Matchday Buses scheme, and the range of initiatives that the club deliver to ensure people can travel to events across the Etihad Campus.
This week was an (exhausting) inspiring showcase of how collaboration and innovation can transform travel to major events. Well done #TeamModeshift!
