National STARS Schools of the Year revealed by the Department for Transport
On Friday 4th December, the Department for Transport (DfT) joined the Modeshift STARS Team along with local authorities and schools from across the country for the Modeshift STARS Education National Celebration Event.
Chris Heaton-Harris MP, Minister for State (Department for Transport) joined the event via video to congratulate the schools for their hard work in reaching the National Awards and thanked them for their contributions for promoting sustainable and active travel in their communities. Officers from the Department for Transport then announced the winners of our National STARS Schools of the Year awards for 2020.
The 2020 National STARS Schools of the Year are as follows:
- National STARS Primary School of the Year – Brookfield Junior Academy
- National STARS Secondary School of the Year – Longcroft School and Sixth Form College
- National STARS Early Years Establishment of the Year – Growing Up Green Day Nursery
Due to current public health restrictions, the Modeshift STARS Team took this year’s event online to provide a fun and engaging event for our twelve 2020 STARS Schools of the Region and their local authorities. In previous years schools have had the opportunity to present the work that they have delivered and celebrate their achievements with the assembled audience. In the spirit of continuing to share examples of best practice, schools were invited to submit a short video to showcase their latest achievements. The response was fantastic with all twelve schools submitting a video that was screened for all to see during the event.
In order to reach the National School Travel Awards event, the twelve STARS Schools of the Region had to compete with over eighty other schools that were nominated for this year’s Regional STARS Awards. The Schools of the Region were assessed by Modeshift’s National Awards Panel, and considered for one of three categories; Early Years Establishment, Primary School and Secondary School of the Year.
Nick Butler, Modeshift STARS National Accreditation manager said “We are blown away by the standard of entries for this year’s National Awards. The Modeshift STARS National Celebration Event is the culmination of the hard work done by schools over a number of years. To be considered for the National STARS School of the Year title is a huge achievement in itself. Our STARS Schools of the Region are shining examples of the dedication and commitment that is being put into increasing levels of walking and cycling by schools across the country. They have shown that they are actively promoting sustainable and active travel in their school communities. By doing so they will support better air quality, improved road safety and increase opportunities for physical activity. I would like to thank our National Awards Panel, who kindly took the time to review the nominations and I would like to congratulate the winners on their success.”
