Forest Park SEN School: adapting STARS initiatives to gain Gold accreditation - A Best Practise Project

Forest Park is a two site school on the outskirts of Southampton. Pupils are aged between 2 and 19 and have a range of Special Educational Needs, including learning difficulties and communication disorders such as Autism. In addition, many pupils have physical or medical difficulties, including the need to use wheelchairs, or sensory impairments such as visual or hearing loss.

The school has recently been awarded their Gold Modeshift STARS and are the STARS National SEND School of the Year 2019.

The school worked hard to adapt STARS initiatives in order to enable all pupils to access the STARS travel activities. Their ‘inventive inclusion’ included:

Extending a ‘bling your bike’ competition to include scooters and wheelchairs. This was also a great way to encourage families to become involved as equipment could be ‘blinged’ at home and then a photo sent in for judging.
