Highlights from South Yorkshire Active Travel Officers - News from PWLC

We want to share highlights from two of our South Yorkshire Active Travel Officers Georgina Simons and Dominic Sweeting.

Air Quality is the theme this month!

With the help of SCC Air Quality team, and Lindsey from PWLC, I'm now set to go out with the Eco Warriors from Lydgate Junior School, Sheffield to commence my first Air Pollution workshop.

Using the Pindar Park & Stride map we created last year as a basis for planning, the Eco Warriors have been deciding where to walk and collect air pollution samples from in order to get the most interesting readings. They’ve considered where pollution might be high or low and made predictions accordingly. They’re super excited to be going outside and collecting real data.

This Air Quality initiative will count towards the schools work in achieving their Silver Modeshift Stars award. In addition they are running a competition to design an Air Pollution banner for the school railings to promote the school walking zone and encourage parents to use Park and Stride instead of parking directly outside the school.

I’m looking forward to getting the pupils involved in this educational and incredibly important project.

Rotherham school of the year 2018 and other special achievements…

Listerdale Junior Academy has been recognised as Rotherham’s best primary school for the second year running in the Regional Modeshift STARS awards held in York last term.

Listerdale Junior Academy is Rotherhams first and only Gold STARS accredited school. Over 83% of pupils travel actively to school thanks to an effective park and stride scheme and a wide range of walking, cycling and scooting initiatives delivered consistently throughout the whole school year. It was extremely rewarding for the STARS team to attend the school’s special Gold Award assembly back in October with support from Rotherham United’s Miller the Bear. Well done to all pupils, parents and staff at the school for all of their hard work!

Bronze award and Bike Blinging

Kilhurst St Thomas C of E Primary Academy have recently completed all outcomes for their Bronze Award just three months after registering for STARS accreditation. They also scooped a prize for the 10 Day Active Travel Challenge for promoting a wide range of active travel initiatives such as Wacky Welly Wednesdays and animal themed dress-up days. Their bike shed was transformed into a scene from wildlife documentary thanks to some truly amazing bike decorations.
